Preventing traffic accidents with advanced analytics

What makes some roads more dangerous than others? The speed limit and the amount of traffic obviously have a big impact, but are there also other and more intricate patterns? And how do different factors like weather conditions, road properties and population density interact with each other to affect the safety on the roads?

The Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) is far ahead, internationally, when it comes to explaining and preventing serious accidents. BearingPoint has helped them utilize modern machine learning techniques to further improve insight into complex risk factors. The machine learning algorithm HyperCube was used for the analysis, which was conducted on a comprehensive dataset of the Norwegian road network enriched with information from open data sources.
