Dija acquires Cambridge startup Genie to support UK expansion

Dija, a London, UK-based grocery delivery startup, announced that it acquired Genie, a smaller startup based on Cambridge, UK.

Financial details were not disclosed. The deal was made as Dija eyes expanding operations outside London. Genies two founders, Tim Chan and Callum MacBeth, are set to join Dija’s launch team to support the expansion.

Genie was founded in 2020 by Tim Chan and Callum MacBeth and was servicing nearby customers with online delivering snacks, drinks and everyday essentials in 15 minutes or fewer.

Dija, founded in 2020 by Alberto Menolascina and Yusuf Saban, is one of the many online grocery startups from Europe funded by venture money. The company, which raised £20 million at the edn of 2020, says it has four warehouse London hubs operating in South Kensington, Fulham, Hackney and Islington, with each hub supporting more than 2,000 products sold at recommended retail prices.

The company also says it plans to open 20 further hubs in London.
