Sweden's central bank to explore digital currency
Sweden's central bank, the Riksbank, announced that it was exploring the idea of issuing some form of electronic money, called ekrona, within two years.
The move comes as the Swedish society is increasingly becoming cashless, as the amount of cash circulating in Sweden has dropped steadily. A recent survey by the Riksbank fond that only 15 percent of respondents said they had made their most recent payment in cash.
It also may be a hedge move to the recent Swedish Krona devaluation against the euro, as the SEK lost almost 10 percent for the past 6 months.
