The Bioenergy in the Nordics seminar will address three major issues:

How large is the potential for bioenergy in the Nordic countries from the biomass availability perspective?
What are the major knowledge gaps and biomass mobilisation obstacles hindering the use of biomass potential?
Which joint research efforts are needed by the Nordic countries?

Nordic Energy Research is a platform for cooperative energy research and policy development under the auspices of Nordic Council of Ministers. In its publication Nordic Energy Technology Perspectives 2016, it was estimated that – in order to arrive at a carbon-neutral situation - the total demand for biofuels and waste would have to increase by around 50% by 2050.

In order to determine whether this can be accomplished from the biomass potential perspective, Nordic Energy Research has initiated a joint Nordic study, "Bioenergy in the Nordics", aiming at assessing the potential for bioenergy and to identify needs for joint Nordic research projects.

Pöyry Management Consulting has, on behalf of Nordic Energy Research, conducted an analysis on the current and future supply potential of biomass for bioenergy in the Nordics, and identified major biomass mobilisation obstacles and knowledge gaps based on expert interviews and publicly available data. The seminar will be to large extent based on workshop type group exercises where the findings from Pöyry´s analysis are discussed and further elaborated on to support analysis on the biomass potential and its mobilization in the Nordic countries.
