The city is not just a place “on top of which” new emerging technologies intervene; it is in fact simultaneously our most durable and dynamically-evolving technology, over which no single professional domain has exclusive agency… What alternative and multidisciplinary forms of urban practice are needed to account for current and future iterations of what we still call “the city”?

Architect and TNN design tutor Nicolay Boyadjiev presents the experimental design work prototyped in “The New Normal” speculative urbanism think-tank / post-graduate program at the Strelka Institute for Architecture, Media and Design in Moscow. The think-tank investigates emerging technologies at the scale of the city, not only in their ability to enable new things to happen, but also in their capacity to reveal what was already there before their emergence and thus recalibrate our relationship to the world and built environment, changing how we think about design in the process. Nicolay presents a selection of alternative urban projects and outputs emblematic of this approach, tentatively grouped as Software / Cinema / Strategy / Protocols.
