Quixel, an Uppsala, Sweden-based creator of the world’s largest photogrammetry asset library and bundled toolset, announced that it was acquired by the American company Epic Games.

The financial details of the transaction were not disclosed. Quixel’s primary operations will remain based in Sweden and the six countries where employees are based.

Quixel, founded in 2011 by Teddy Bergsman and Waqar Azim, develops tools for 3D artists, primarily in the video game and film industries, with the vision to substantially speed up how creators build digital environments.

The company also built a database named Megascans, a library of 2D and 3D photogrammetry assets capturing real-world objects, buildings and even animal fur, which can be downloaded by videogame artists. Megascans currently hosts more than 10,000 assets. Game developers, filmmakers, and visualization specialists use Quixel Megascans assets to craft blockbuster games (Metro Exodus, Destiny 2, Battlefield V), animated entertainment (The Jungle Book, Black Panther, The Lion King, Pacific Rim: Uprising), and lifelike scenes through high-quality content and access to a vast array of tools.

Prior to being acquired, Quixel was funded by GP Bullhound and Back in Black Capital, which were part of a $3M investment round in 2018.

Total investments received (USD): 3.04M
