Umbra was acquired by Amazon.

Umbra, a Helsinki, FInland-based developer of 3D graphics technology, was acquired by the American retailer Amazon.

Financial details were not disclosed. Umbra’s 25 employees will continue as Amazon team in Helsinki and Tampere.

Umbra, founded as a spin off from Hybrid Graphics in 2005 by CEO Otso Mäkinen, specializes in occlusion culling, visibility solution technology and provides middleware for video games running on Windows, Linux, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, handheld consoles, iOS, Wii U and other platforms.

The company has one of the most advanced technologies in the world to manage giant 3D models in the cloud service as well.

Umbra was not a profitable enterprise at a €1.3M turnover in 2019 and was backed by investors including Inventure, Lifeline Ventures and Initial Capital which funded the company with $3.4M in 2015.
