Verbling was acquired by UK-based Busuu.
Verbling, a Swedish live video tutoring company based in San Francisco, announced that it was acuired by the British language-learning platform Busuu.
Financial details of the transaction remained undisclosed. Busuu will now use the Verbling platform to expand into the live video tutoring space for its consumer users and corporate clients. Following the acquisition, Verbling’s team members, including Bernstein and Gustav Rydstedt (CTO) will join Busuu. The California startup’s platform will provide the foundation of Busuu Live, which will launch in the coming months.
Verbling was founded in San Francisco in 2011 by the Swedish co-founders Mikael Bernstein (CEO) and Gustav Rydstedt (CTO) who met while studying at Stanford University. They built an online language tutoring platform that connects more than 10,000 professional teachers with language learners through live video. The video tutoring consists of interactive one-on-one lessons in nearly 60 different languages.
Verbling was backed by the YC and upon graduation raised over $4.4 million from Learn Capital, DFJ and Bullpen Capital.
Busuu, founded in Madrid in 2008 by Bernhard Niesner and moved to London in 2012, has 100 million users, acquiring one new user every three seconds across 190 countries.
