The venture scouts from Europe - who are they and what they invest in?

Venture scouting has become so normal in Europe that it's a weekly topic covered by the mainstream media.

While most of the time it doesn't really make sense for a startup to work with scouts, the rationale for investors is quite simple and efficient - another distribution channel that buys them early stage intel at very low costs ($20-40k per round is as much as a bespoke McKinsey research report, for example). The scouts are mere part-time sales representatives - they sell money on behalf of a VC - with the benefit of a side gig worth putting on the resume and via which they may learn the VC business, should they ever wish to pivot from working for the other side of the table.

We thought it'd be interesting to put some data on top of it and review the scouts activity of some of the high profile VCs that are known to operate venture scout programs in Europe.

We have produced a cheat sheet report with a list of 49 venture scouts that are known to invest on behalf of VCs in Europe. According to the data we track, the said individuals have done 84 deals in Europe this year (note the data is as of October 2021).

NB: We have used the assumption that all the angel deals that have been invested in post announcement of scouts joining the respective programs, are made on the name of the VC. This may not always be the case as there's instances where scouts act as angels and invest on their behalf as well and/or contribute to a round their own money together with the VC they work for.
