Threema raises funding from Afinum Management.

Threema, a Pfäffikon (Zurich), Switzerland-based software developer of an end-to-end encrypted instant messaging application, announced that it entered into an invstment agreement with the German-Swiss investment company Afinum Management AG.

Financial details were not disclosed.

Threema, founded in 2012 by Manuel Kasper, Silvan Engeler and Martin Blatter, developed a mobile messaging app using true end-to-end encryption for security. The app is based on the privacy by design principles and the service doesn't require users to provide a phone number or any other personally identifiable information: The Threema app can be used anonymously.

The app has had over eight million users, 80% outside of Switzerland and 25% from roughly 5,000 organizations that use the Threema Work chat service.
