European startups at Y Combinator in winter 2022
That time of the year, respecting the tradition to review the startups from Europe participating at Y Combinator - we have been doing this for the YC summer 2021, winter 2021 and in 2020.
YC is probably one of the most famous startup accelerators in the tech startup world. And, unlike lots of real life situations where you need to know somebody who knows somebody to connect you and create a privileged business relationship, Y Combinator has the fame of providing a fair chance for everybody. And so we encourage all the founders we work with to consider applying.
Notably, starting with 2022, there will be a major change in the way Y Combinator approaches the funding of the startups joing its accelerator - namely they now invest $500,000 in batch startups. The 500k will be allocated this way:
- 125k for 7% of the startup equity upon being selected in the accelerator, at the start of each program
- 375k as an uncapped SAFE note, with a “most favored nation” clause.
Uncapped means that there is no defined maximum price at which the SAFE amount converts into shares, while the “most favored nation” clause ensures that Y Combinator gets as good a deal as anyone else in a later conversion.
The winter 2022 batch of startups incubated by Y Combinator will pitch investors at the Demo Day on March 29 and March 30. YC selected a total of 337 startups for its winter program this year, roughly 10% of which - 38 - are from Europe. That is some 20 less than last summer and 1 more than in winter 2021 - the total batch is also lower than in the summer (373) but higher than last winter (289).
The country breakdown from this year is as follows:
The UK - 12 startups
Germany - 6 startups
France - 5 startups
Spain - 4 startups
Netherlands - 3 startups
Sweden - 3 startups
Denmark - 2 startup
Finland - 1 startup
Norway - 1 startup
Switzerland - 1 startup
