It has s become a tradition to review the European startups participating at Y Combinator, we have been doing this both this winter and in 2020.

YC is probably one of the most famous startup accelerators in the tech startup world. And, unlike lots of real life situations where you need to know somebody who knows somebody to connect you and create a privileged business relationship, Y Combinator has the fame of providing a fair chance for everybody. And so we encourage all the founders we work with to consider applying.

End of August means that the summer batch of startups incubated by Y Combinator will pitch investors at the Demo Day.

YC says that the summer of 2021 batch (373 companies) is 80% larger than its Summer of 2020 batch. Out of those, USA has 184 listed startups, from which 61 are from San Francisco and 21 from New York.

Europe has 54 startups, 20% more than in the winter. Countries such as UK and France have more companies than they did in the winter while Sweden and Norway, typically a great startup pool in Europe, have none. Also countries such as Romania and Cyprus have each one startup part of the program, while Ireland has 4.

Most of the startups have not raised money yet - a handful of them though already have done so from European investors, including GFC, Kima Ventures, Passion Capital or First Momentum Ventures. Also notably, all 3 Spanish startups have raised prior to joining YC, with one of them having raised more than $5 million in total.

Not least interesting, some YC companies are said to be currently raising at $30M-50M valuations. Which is quite high for pre-seed and seed levels, yet another sign that we are at peak market. It is also more difficult to raise at this level - as an example, only about half the Euro startups have raised post participating in the YC 2021 winter program. A good number of them simply returned to Europe post demo day and accepted European valuations, which are lower than what the Silicon Valley market dictates.

We have reviewed and profiled all 54 startups from the 2021 YC summer program and put them in a report available here.
